The context of community health ? where community members live, work, eat and socialize ? is important to understanding the disparities in health faced by many of Minnesota?s populations. The specific situations of certain populations bring forth questions as to how best to ensure, promote and protect health among communities that may not experience health and health care as the majority of Minnesotans do. This course will provide participants with an overview of a culturally specific community ? the traditional African-American populations of the Twin Cities ? with a special focus on the role of culture in health. The second day of the course will be a field trip to a variety of organizations that are working in their communities to promote and protect the health of these populations. There will be ample time for discussion and interaction with these public health practitioners.
